What makes an AI truly “agentic”

Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that don’t just respond to static prompts, but can act autonomously to achieve complex, multi-step goals. It’s an automated workflow that uses AI to make decisions on work, how to transform it and where to move it next. AI assistance – Generative AI – changes how we write and think, but Agentic AI changes how we execute work. It shifts the human role from being the primary builder to being the supervisor who defines goals, sets boundaries, and reviews the final output 

Think of generative AI as a calculator or an assistant—you ask a specific question, and it gives you a specific answer. Agentic AI behaves more like a delegate. You give it an objective, and it figures out the necessary steps, adapts to obstacles, and uses digital tools to get the job done without you holding its hand. 

Core Characteristics of Agentic AI 

What makes an AI truly “agentic” boils down to four main behaviors: 

• Autonomy: It can break a broad goal (e.g., “Research and book the best flight and hotel options for a 3-day conference in Chicago”) into a sequence of smaller tasks without needing step-by-step user confirmation. 
• Tool Use: It knows how to interact with the outside world. It can browse the web, execute code, read and write to databases, or call external APIs to gather data or perform actions. 
• Reasoning & Planning: If a workflow hits a roadblock—like a website being down or a software error—the agent can evaluate what went wrong, pivot its strategy, and try an alternative route. 
• Memory: It maintains both short-term context (what it’s doing right now in a multi-step task) and long-term memory (recalling past interactions, user preferences, or previous results) to improve its efficiency.
